ree

Are you a member of an Art Society? would you like Martin to come and talk to your Group?

Following Martin's life changing year at the Royal College of Art he has been invited back to deliver a series of lectures to the current cohort - a huge honour and he is truly delighted to be asked .

On our long drive between family in Norfolk and home in Yorkshire we wondered if any of our loyal students who are members of an Art Society would like Martin to visit and deliver the Anatomy of a Painting lecture in person? here are the details

A Lecture by Martin Kinnear

The Anatomy of a Painting reveals what really lies beneath the surface of great art. In this lively, image-rich talk, award-winning painter and RCA lecturer Martin Kinnear unpacks the hidden structure of paintings — from pigments and mediums to perception and meaning — showing how understanding a picture’s anatomy transforms the way we see and create art.

Full Lecture Description

Every painting tells a story — not only on its surface, but deep within its layers. Beneath the visible image lies a carefully constructed anatomy of structure, tone, colour, and material that gives the work its life.

In The Anatomy of a Painting, award-winning painter and Royal College of Art lecturer Martin Kinnear takes audiences beneath the skin of painting to reveal how artists, from the Old Masters to today’s innovators, build pictures that endure.

Far from being a dry technical talk, this lecture combines insight, humour, and live visual examples to show how materials shape meaning. Martin explains how pigments, mediums, and surfaces interact, why certain techniques produce such distinctive light and texture, and how a painting’s success often depends on decisions invisible to the viewer.

Drawing on his own studio practice — and on works by Rembrandt, Turner, Constable, and Emily Young — Martin unpacks the physical language of painting: how an earth pigment creates gravity, how a glaze lends breath, how chalk, oil, and varnish each have their own temperament. Audiences leave not just informed, but newly attuned to what makes paintings work.

This lecture is ideal for art societies, museums, and painting groups who want a fascinating, down-to-earth look at how painters think and make.
