Martin Kinnear’s Contemporary Atelier is dedicated to redefining what it means to teach painting in the 21st century. Rather than preserving a single tradition, this pioneering approach integrates a full spectrum of painting developments since 1874—beginning with Impressionism and extending through Modernism, Abstraction, and Postmodern practices—anchored by rigorous foundational skills in technique, composition, and visual perception.

This is not a revivalist school, nor a place for stylistic imitation. It is a progressive, critically informed environment that acknowledges the technical legacy of the past while embracing the conceptual and material breakthroughs that have shaped contemporary painting. Currently being developed and taught by Martin Kinnear at the Royal College of Art, this new approach represents a bold step forward: a truly contemporary atelier model for serious painters who want to master technique while engaging meaningfully with the evolving language of art.
