Pattern From Life with Paul Minter

I have always loved pattern; I think it is a very human need to decorate surfaces. We will look at painters  of the Gothic and Renaissance periods. Twentieth century painters like Matisse and Bonnard. We will make original work that acknowledges brilliant ceramics  and glass and stunning textiles. We will not copy any of these works, but rather look at how to find pattern in real objects and treat that as a starting point. This course is about letting go and making work that might surprise you and provide you with permission to be a different artist to the one that you thought you were. Our inspiration as a painter can’t come from painting alone, the world is full of applied art, and nature, from which we can gain endless inspiration. Finally, this line of enquiry might provide a route into abstract art. How exciting would that be?
