A Bit About Martin

I’m Martin Kinnear, a professional painter and teacher with over 20 years of experience working with oil paint.

I trained at the Royal College of Art, where I now also teach as a guest lecturer, and I am currently a doctoral researcher at the Courtauld Institute of Art, both ranked number one in the world in the subjects I teach. My work has been recognised internationally, including a medal at the Paris Salon, and is held in collections such as the UK Government Art Collection.

Alongside my studio practice, I’ve spent many years helping people learn to paint, from complete beginners to experienced artists looking to develop their own style, not just learn a house style.

My teaching is built on a simple idea: painting should be clear, structured, and enjoyable to learn. Many people feel that art is confusing or only for the naturally talented, I don’t believe that. With the right guidance, anyone can make real progress and produce work they’re proud of.

Over the years, I’ve developed a step-by-step approach that breaks complex techniques into manageable stages. Whether you’re just starting out or returning to painting after a long break, the aim is always the same, to build confidence, skill, and a real understanding of how painting works.

You can see a gallery of some of my teaching works here, and access my professional site and instagram feeds by using the links below

If you’re willing to put in a bit of time and curiosity, I’ll help you get there.
